Chinenye Onuorah Named BIG EAST Women’s Track Athlete of the Week


QUEENS, N.Y. – After recording a BIG EAST leading performance in the 400-meter dash and aiding the St. John’s track & field team to a Metropolitan Indoor Championship title, Chinenye Onuorah was named the BIG EAST Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday morning.
 
This accolade marks the first time in her career that Onuorah has received a BIG EAST weekly award.
 
The junior played a pivotal part in leading the Johnnies to their second straight Metropolitan Indoor Championship by winning the 400-meter dash and the 4×200-meter relay at the meet. As a team, St. John’s rung up 199 total points, 55.5 more than second-place Fordham.
 

In the 400-meter dash, the Loei, Thailand native produced a BIG EAST leading time of 55.32 seconds for her first win of the day. The win marked her first individual victory of the indoor track & field season.
 
Onuorah also earned her first relay win of the season at the meet in the 4×200-meter relay. Her squad dominated the race for a 1:40.13 mark and a first-place result.
 
The Red Storm will be back in action on Friday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston. On Sunday, the program returns to New York for the historic Millrose Games at The Armory in Manhattan.
