Foote, Young Garner Mountain West Weekly Honors

SAN DIEGO – For the second time in three weeks, San Diego State saw two student-athletes earn Mountain West weekly honors for their indoor performances. Shaquena Foote was named MW Women’s Track Athlete of the Week while Xiamara Young won the award in the field events.

Foote garners the award for the second this season after breaking her own school record in the 400m dash. Her time of 53.26 bested her PR and program best she set just two weeks ago at SDSU’s indoor season opener. Her time was good for third overall in the invitational section, and second among all collegiate competitors. Her 400m time currently leads the conference, ranks fourth in the west region, and 32nd in all of NCAA.

The native of Jamaica also ran her first 60m of the season, crossing the line in 7.49 in the invitational prelims. She finished 22nd overall, but the time ranks as the fourth fastest in the Mountain West.

Young earns her first career Mountain West weekly honor with a pair of program top ten marks in triple jump and long jump. In Saturday’s triple jump at the UNM Collegiate Classic, she posted a mark of 41-8 to win her flight and qualify for the finals. In her fifth attempt of the day, she jumped 13.10m (42-11.75) to move into fifth in SDSU indoor history and place fourth overall, second among collegiate jumpers. She currently ranks third in the Mountain West, fourth in the west region, and 17th in the country.

The junior from Las Vegas also competed in long jump this past weekend, going 6.02m (19-9) on her second attempt. The jump is good for tenth on the Aztecs’ all-time list and sixth among the current MW leaders for the event.

Both Foote and Young along with the largest group of Aztecs thus far this season will head back to Albuquerque this weekend for the Don Kirby Invitational.
