CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In one of the most important meets of the indoor season, the Charlotte track and field team will head to Lynchburg, Va. for the Darius Dixon Invitational this weekend. The meet, hosted by Liberty University, will begin on Friday at 2 p.m. and continue through Saturday afternoon.
The 49ers will send a large continent of athletes in a variety of competitions as they begin preparation for the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in just two weeks.
LAST TIME OUT
Charlotte had a productive outing at the Doc Hale Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. last weekend. Riley Felts set a new school record in the women’s pole vault with a clearance of with a clearance of 14′ 6.75″ (4.44m) en route to being named The American’s Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
In addition, Sasha Gregory set the school record in the women’s pentathlon with 3611 total points, finishing first in the 60m hurdles and long jump. The Niners added four top-10 all-time performances to their record book.
“This weekend at Liberty is almost a dress rehearsal for the conference championship,” said Charlotte head coach Bob Olesen. “We will have all event areas represented and are seeking season-bests to move up the conference rankings and pursue top-10 and school record performances.”
“This is a big weekend for our athletes to show they are nearly ready for the conference meet and to be included on that travel squad. We haven’t necessarily entered athletes in all the events they may do in a championship, but we expect the events they are in to be near championship-level performances.”
