CATES BREAKS MILE RECORD ON BUSY FRIDAY

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Senior Ellie Cates picked off the program’s mile record as members of the IUPUI women’s track and field team competed at both the GVSU Big Meet and Marian Indoor Invitational on Friday (Feb. 9). Cates was one of three Jaguars to earn a new personal best at the GVSU Big Meet on Friday while two others collected new personal records at the Marian Invitational inside Fall Creek Pavilion in Indianapolis.

Cates finished fifth overall of 66 entrants spread across four heats, crossing the finish line at 4:56.76. In doing so, she broke the school record by more than two seconds and shed six seconds off her previous best. She became just the second IUPUI runner in program history to go under 5-minutes in the mile, joining Allie Wright, who achieved the feat twice. It’s Cates’ second school record of this indoor season as she previously broke the 3K record at the Butler Invitational on Jan. 20.

“I’m super proud of how everyone came today and showed out,” Cates said. “I’m super happy with another record and excited to see how conference shapes up.”

Laci Provenzano broke her own personal best in the 5K earlier in the morning with a time of 18:08.21, taking five seconds off her previous best. Sophomore Wini Barnett took six seconds off her previous best time in the 800 with a time of 2:16.19, moving up to No. 8 on the program’s all-time list.

Madison Fry just missed a personal best in the 3K with a time of 10:15.84 while Sophie Reichard ran a season best mile time of 5:10.18, missing a new personal best by less than a second.

At the Marian Invite, both Hannah Sale (3:08.34) and Hannah Robbins (3:11.44) set personal bests in the 1,000m event, finishing fifth and eighth, respectively. In the 3,000m event, Kara Krol clocked a time of 11:08.79 and Rebecca Orvis finished at 11:57.40.

Four of the five Jaguars in Michigan will compete against on Saturday at Grand Valley, making their final tune-ups before the upcoming Horizon League Indoor Championships in Youngstown, Ohio.
