Liam Murphy Runs No. 2 Indoor Time in the Mile at Millrose Games

NEW YORK—Senior distance runner Liam Murphy (Millstone, N.J.) competed against several of the top milers in the world in the prestigious Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games on Sunday afternoon. He posted a time of 3:53.96 in the race to notch the second-fastest indoor time in school history, trailing only his own school record set last month. Murphy was one of two collegians in the field of 13 runners and ran alongside former Villanova five-time All-American Casey Comber.
The level of talent in the latest edition of the famed Wanamaker Mile was evidenced by the race going out at a world record pace for the first 800 meters. Murphy was at the back of the pack early on before moving up four spots in the final half-mile. He nearly matched the Wildcats indoor school record of 3:53.85 which Murphy set at Penn State on January 26. He remains the only Villanova athlete to break 3:54 indoors and he has now run seven career races with a sub-four minute mile or the metric equivalent in the 1500 meters. Murphy’s time on Sunday at the Millrose Games converted to a 3:38.33 en route 1500 meters mark.
Over the past year Murphy has broken the Wildcats indoor school records in the mile (3:53.85), the 3000 meters (7:45.67) and the 5000 meters (13:21.20). The records in both the mile and the 5000 meters have come this season and Murphy came out of the weekend ranked ninth on this year’s national Division I descending order list which will be used to determine NCAA Championships qualifiers in March. The top 16 declared athletes in each individual event will be selected for the national meet in Boston on March 8-9.
