NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Senior Mia Bawendi broke her own school record in the pole vault to highlight action for the Amherst College women’s track and field team on Friday in the first day of the Carla Coffey Invitational at Smith College.
The Mammoths will be back at Smith on Saturday (April 13), where a full slate of track and field action begins at 9 a.m. for the final day of the Coffey Invitational. Amherst will also have a contingent at Bucknell University for the Bison Outdoor Classic, where action gets underway at noon.
MEET HIGHLIGHTS:
* Bawendi cleared 3.70m on her second attempt to break her own Amherst school record of 3.60m that was set last season. She tied for second in the event with a mark that ranks among the top 20 in Division III this season.
* Senior Carolina Andrade finished second in the javelin with a throw of 37.07m.
* Senior Bethany Martin placed sixth in the hammer with a throw of 38.90m.
* Through four of seven events in the heptathlon, junior Anaya Thomas sits in third place with 2401 points. Thomas was the top finisher in the 100m hurdles in a personal-best time of 15.69 seconds and tied for the top spot in the high jump, clearing 1.56m. Williams sophomore Livi Mazerolle has the lead with 2647 points with the final three events to be contested on Saturday.
* With 3 of 20 events complete, the Mammoths have tallied 18 points in the team standings to rank third out of the 11 teams competing. Middlebury leads with 34 points.
