Boys and girls track and field standouts starting to leave an impression – Whittier Daily News

Just over a month into the high school track and field season, some local athletes are among the top marks in the CIF Southern Section this season.

Bigger meets like the Covina Invitational (March  29-30), Arcadia Invite (April 5-6) and Mt. SAC Relays (April 18-20) are still ahead, but there has already been some impressive performances.

At Saturday’s Jim Polite Invitational at Walnut HS, Bonita junior Daiveon Woodley won the in 21.96, which is the fifth-fastest time in the Southern Section. He also won the 100 meters in 11.27, but has a personal best of 10.95 that he posted in a dual meet a few weeks back.

South Pasadena’s Keeran Murray, who finished second in the 800 meters at the CIF-SS Division 3 finals last year, finished second in the 800 at the Redondo Nike Track Festival in 1:56.03, which is the seventh fastest time in the section this season.

St. Francis’ senior distance runner Samuel Franco also reached the Division 3 finals last year in the 3, where he finished eighth in 9:29.97. Franco already has improved on that time signficantly, a personal best 9:10.06 at the Nike Track Festival in a competitive field where he finished fifth — but still among the section’s top ten best marks. Franco will also be one to watch in the 1,600 meters.

Marshall’s Hagop Marmarian hurled the second-best throw among Southern Section standouts during the boys shot put at the John Godina Throwers Classic with a personal best of 57 feet, 7 inches. Marmarian finished second in the Division 3 finals last year.

St. Paul senior Orlando Zepeda just missed reaching the Division 4 finals in the boys long jump last season, but is off to a good start this season with a personal best of 22 feet that he posted at the St. Paul Classic. That was a big improvement over the 19′ 5.75 leap at the Division 4 prelims a year ago.

MIA HOLDEN SHOWS IMPROVED

South Pasadena’s Mia Holden was one of the area’s top juniors standouts a year ago, winning the 300 at the Division 3 finals in 43.81, and finishing fourth in the 100 in 15.04. She also finished fourth in the D3 finals in the triple jump.

Although Holden has yet to perform in any of those events this season, she showed her has improved by a personal best in the 100 meters at the Redondo meet in 12.08, which is the ninth-fastest time in the Southern Section.

Two of the area’s best middle distance runners met during the 800 meters at the Rio Hondo/Pacific League challenge as La ’s Katelyn Matarese won the race in 2:14.91 to edge out second-place finisher Reena Hsieh of Arcadia in 2:15.33. Both marks are among the ten best Southern Section times. Hsieh finished third a the Division 1 finals last season in the 800

Hsieh, who finished fourth in the 1,600 meters at the D1 finals, won the RHL/PL challenge in the 1,600 in 4:55.11, finishing ahead of second-place finisher Maya DeBrouwer of La Canada in 4:56.66. Those were the second and fourth fastest times this season. With both competitors in the same league, expect them to battle it out during the season.

La Canada’s Katherine McGuinness will be one to watch in the 100 along with Holden. She won the RHL/PL challenge in 15.31.

Arcadia junior Layla Roslan ran the fifth-fastest time in the CIF-SS in the 300 hurdles, winning the Arcadia Mini Meet in 45.70, a personal best.
