Kash Merritt is on the 4 x 400 relay team and runs in the 400 meters. Logan Class tosses the discus and is also in the long jump. The seniors will open their final season with a home meet today (Thursday) at Vannoy Field.
“We’ve been outside nearly every day getting ready for the season, but it’s been a little different with the weather,” Merritt said of the preparations. “Some days have been cold and others kind of hot, so it’s been tough to get in shape. Overall, it’s been a success with the conditioning and nice to have a home meet to start the season.”
Head coach Bret Engdahl expects a total of 15 teams for the season opener. The coach will be relying on his experienced boys coming back to help the team defend its Region 3A title from last season. The Cody boys went on to finish third at the State Meet.
Maddax Ball, a junior, is back in the field events. He competes in the high jump and triple jump. Wyatt Barton is another junior in the field events. He competes in the shot put and discus events.
Younger runners will help the team in the long distance events. Syrus Bates is a sophomore who runs in the 800 and 1600 meters.
Sean Gaul runs in the 400 meters and also is out in the field in the pole vault. Sophomore Randall Nielson is a long distance runner in the 3200 meters.
Nick Stewart is a sophomore in the pole vault and triple jump. Aiden Power is a sophomore runner in the 400 meters. Isaac Winters, a sophomore, is in the triple jump.
“We have a total of 118 kids on the two teams with 62 on the boys,” coach Engdahl said. “I’m pleased with the turnout and we have a good group back this season. A lot of the kids gained valuable experience in the indoor season.”
Freshmen round out the roster for the Broncs. Benjamin Stewart is a distance runner in the 1600 and 3200 meters. He also is part of the 4 x 800 relay team.
Kyler Stinson, a freshman, was All-State during the indoor track and field season as part of the 4 x 400 relay team. Stinson also runs in the 400 and 800 meters. Freshman Cache McFadden will compete in three events with the high jump, triple jump and 300 meter hurdles.
In addition to a home meet to open the season, the Broncs will also host the Cody Trackstravaganza on May 2.
