CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Eliza Cardwell smashed her own school record in the 100m hurdles with one of the best runs in Division III history as the Amherst College women’s track and field team competed at the MIT Final Qualifier on Friday, looking to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Championships on the final day of competition before selections are finalized.
Cardwell won the 100m hurdles, running a time of 13.62 seconds in the preliminaries before winning the final in 14.20 seconds. Cardwell’s prelim time is the second-fastest wind-legal time in NCAA Division III history, behind only the 13.60 ran by Bridget Cochran of Christopher Newport in 1998. It is also the best wind-legal and second-best all-conditions time in Division III this season, breaking her previous Amherst record of 14.13 seconds, set at last year’s NEICAAA Championships. Times in all conditions are valid for championships qualification while only times with wind of less than 2.0 m/s are valid for records. The wind was measured at 1.9 m/s for Cardwell’s prelim run.
Selections for the NCAA Division III Championships will be announced on Friday (May 17) with the top 22 athletes in individual events and top 16 teams in each relay event earning a trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to compete for national championships from May 23-25.
