Lexington, Ky. – The Elon University track & field team recorded three top 25 performances Saturday on the final day of the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Round, threatening for national championship bids in each event on the day. The top 12 finishers at the NCAA East Regional advance to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Eugene, Ore.
The day began with an impressive showing by Kaitlin McGoogan in the discus. Entering as the No. 36 seed, she opened competition with her best throw of the day, marking 166-feet (50.61m). That distance was second after the first flight and was good enough to finish 24th on the day. The effort was the fourth-best discus place and performance in Elon school history at a regional.
Hannah Miller hit the track for the 3000 steeplechase and she placed 22nd overall with a time of 10:27.78. She finished four spots higher and four seconds faster than she did at the same regional meet a year ago. The 22nd place finish is tied for the second-best finish ever by an Elon steeplechaser at regionals.
The night concluded with the team’s best finish of the weekend as Jette Beermann placed 16th in the 5,000 with a time of 16:04.45. She was in seventh after her section and threatened to earn one of the two wildcard spots (non-top five section finishes) to nationals but came up just short. Beermann’s time was the fastest in Elon history at a regional and the program’s second-best place finish.
The Elon University track & field program finished the year as CAA runners-up in both the indoor and outdoor season. Five members of the team earned trips to the NCAA East Regional, tying a program record.
