The Louisa County girls and Charlottesville boys track and field teams both earned hard-fought titles at the Jefferson District Championships in Mineral on Wednesday.
The Lions finished with 126 points to edge Charlottesville (111 points) and Albemarle (100) for the girls title, while the Black Knights tallied 138 points to narrowly edge Western Albemarle (130 points) for the boys crown. Orange County finished third in the boys team competition with 69 points.
Louisa picked up three events wins and one relay title en route to the girls team championship. Elizabeth Middlesworth won the 400-meter race in 1:00.92, while Sandra Davenport raced to victory in the 3,200 in 12:50.82. Taylor Waddy won the shot put with a throw of 35-04.00 for the Lions, who also won the 4X400 relay (4:03.65).
Charlottesville’s Elaina Pierce continued her stellar season, winning the 800 (2:17.34) and the 1,600 (5:11.09). Her teammate, Rose O’Shea, won the 300 hurdles in 46.52. The Black Knights also won the 4X800 relay (11:05.07).

Ashlyn Zarzyski had a memorable district meet for Albemarle, winning titles in the 100 hurdles (15.59) as well as the long jump 18-04.50 and triple jump (37-04.00). The Patriots also got event wins from Kaydence Hawkins in the 100-meter dash (12.86) and Laila Watkins in the 200 (25.76), and raced to victory in the 4X100 relay (49.15).
Western Albemarle picked up wins in two field events. Raina Fitzwater was victorious in the pole vault after clearing 12-06.00, and Elisabeth Shin captured the discuss crown with a throw of 100-03. Fluvanna’s Aaniyah Ragland won the high jump after clearing 5-03.00.
The Charlottesville boys track and field team has a strong stable of distance runners and their talent was on full display during the Jefferson District meet.
Nathaniel Orban (4:28.72) narrowly edged teammate Graham Goodale (4:28.82) to win the 1,600 title. Goodale was in another tight race in the 3,200, crossing the line in 10:03.50 to edge Albemarle’s Baelin Duncan (10:03.74) for the win.
The Black Knights also fared well in the relays, winning the 4X100 (44.50) and 4X800 (8:11.09) crowns. Callan Smith and JayQuan Jones gave CHS crucial points in the field events. Smith won the pole vault after clearing 14-06.00, while Jones won the triple jump with a leap of 44-04.50.
Connor Rittenhouse and Anders Felts both shined for Western Albemarle. Rittenhouse won titles in the 200 (22.32) and the 400 (49.79), while Felts was victorious in the 110 hurdles (16.22) and 300 hurdles (39.55). Their teammate, Kai Lehmensiek, won the 800 crown in 1:58.50, and the Warriors’ 4X400 relay team crossed the line first in 3:26.05.
Orange County’s David Norman won titles in the 100-meter dash (11.05) and the long jump (21-11.00). The Hornets also got event victories from Brian Plamp, who cleared 5-10.00 in the high jump, and Brandon Testa who delivered a throw of 50-03.00 in the shot put.
Fluvanna County’s Logan Wade won the discuss title with a throw of 130-06.
Now the Jefferson District’s teams turn their attention to their respective regional meets.
