Bro why is that stadium so dead
D3 ran faster
Need to fix your audio! Volume too low.
get it buddy, that’s my boy 💪🏽
Nice race!
Thats some stupid running ever. Fast and then slow it down. Slow time as well. Stupid.
just glad to see the handsy wisco runner not podium
still was a tough win, but it was fairly obv to me that the winner would’ve been different if the reigning champ wasn’t boxed till the last 90 meters by the winner’s teammates + the drake athlete. at the end of the day a win’s a win no matter how gritty.
Joe Waskom is a beast!
Used to run against the guy who got last, homie gonna win it next year for sure
Pathetic. I hate when runners conserve energy in a final. Absolutely pathetic. When you do that, you put your race in everyone else’s hands.
Seems like some team tactics from Washington to me. Garcia Romo was the best athlete in that field by far
Waskom has 1 pac12 title and now 1 ncaa title. What a jump.
WF guy was in last most of the time and made it to 4th the last 100m
the person who’s in charge of thumbnails needs to be written up.
(2:17) Here we go.
Would've been nice if Romo went into lane 2. No way he was gonna get the win running in lane 1 with Waskom that close to the rail.
Painful to watch
@NCAA Championships your spoiler thumbnails suck. Your audio sucks.
Time should've been at least seven seconds quicker… boring final.
Midwest is being represented very well at the NCAAs this year!
It's a shame how so many runners treat 1500m finals, whether in a race like this or even the Olympics. So often, the would-be champion gives away the race by allowing it to be turned into a 600m time trial.
Basten ran a gutsy race and placed himself in a good position to win- unfortunately he tied up in the last 100 metres! He has another year to redeem himself, but there are a lot of young guns coming into the NCAA’s next year, including the star runner from Newbury Park, Colin Sahlman, who has recently run a 3:56 mile!
A lot of people hating in these comments that could not break 5 in a mile…lol
Ridiculous pace!
Tactical races are horrible for a championship. The best runner doesn't necessarily win. Shame on front runners for this to happen and shame on those that took their race plan out of the mix that were going to go fast early.
Romo should’ve won this race. Just got so boxed he had nowhere to go. You hate to see it
that's what happens you jog instead of run the whole race
That Washington "celebration" at the end was so cringe.
Thought this race kinda sucked. Just to be honest
Good tactics by Washington except for giving up the rail in the last 100m
@Parker Max If Bastens racing strategy improves I have no doubt he’ll win. He did the same thing outdoor here as he did at the indoor championships and it cost him. When the race is slowed down significantly as in this race and the indoor championships you CANNOT be at the back of the pack when things start picking up. He’s essentially giving the people in front a 10 meter head start in a 500 meter race in this case. Most of these guys are using little energy running that slow of a pace (67s lap) so once it picks up he’s just set himself up for failure. Nick symmonds has a video explaining exactly why this doesn't work, and how disadvantageous this really is. Now Im not suggesting by any means that running from the back is a bad strategy in all cases. In a much faster race say 3:35–3:38 front running is not always the most ideal strategic approach. Basten had to make a massive move soon after the race started picking up with about 450 meters to go and it cost him later on. Its basic racing strategy. Isaac is an extremely good finisher (arguably the best in this field) and fantastic athlete overall but until he fixes that strategy, it doesnt matter how good his kick is, he wont win in slower race like this against world class athletes.
Raced against Waskom back in middle schoo!! Awesome to see him winning at such a high level
Roma givin me centro vibes here
3:45 winning time. That’s like a 4:03 mile. I expect that time from a NCAA Division III championship final, not Division I.
Waskom caught Romo with his pants down, so to speak. You love to see it.
this race is why Joe Waskom is one of my favorite runners to watch. He always has a plan and he executes perfectly. A beautiful race to watch.
Sound level, guys! Too low!!!!!!!
This just illustrates why the US has no chance to medal in the global championships for the 1500M. Just crap racing and crap times. Its embarrassing.
Basten was like Pre in '72
Yeah the guys from Washington def didn’t work together…..solid box they made.
super cool guy, met him last summer! didn’t even break 4 last year and now he winning nationals
Some lessons to be learned here for Romo. I saw this same thing last year at the Olympic Trials with HS phenom Hobbs Kessler.
The lesson is the last part of the back straight of the 3rd lap some runners farther back in the pack are going to kick right before the turn so they aren’t completely out of it, then during the turn itself some others will also do so despite having to go wide because otherwise they’ll also have no chance. And finally the leaders will begin revving it up in response to those moves during the straight away just before the bell.
So there was Romo on the rail in first place the entire race to 2:35, (570m remaining) but then gets boxed in by two guys and over the next 40 seconds as everyone makes their move Romo ends up with literally a wall of four runners side by side in front of him just before entering the final turn.
I hate the "sit & kick" 1500 races! Nobody even close to a PR. I also never understood why guys who don't have great kicks fall for that. If you aren't a great kicker, push the pace, run a PR and make them beat you!
thats what you call defence
This is why we wont have a world champion in the 1500/mile. Too much bullshidding. Not enough hard running.
Disappointing tactical race by great runners. Championship run – pedestrian at best winning time (by standard of what they're capable of), Same every year.
