Men’s Title; Records Highlight Impressive Indoor Track and Field Season


During the 2024 indoor season, the Youngstown State men’s and women’s track and field programs accumulated eight school records, the men set a league record for points in winning the Horizon League Championship and sent an athlete to the NCAA Championships.

The men’s team raced to their ninth straight Horizon League title and 10th overall, while the women finished in second place. Youngstown State was the only school in the Horizon League to be present at the NCAA meet.

YSU was represented at the NCAA Track and Field Championships by Tye Hunt. Hunt finished ninth in the long jump at the NCAA meet advancing to the finals in the event held in Boston, Mass.

As far as school records during the year, the men set new best marks in four events while the women have new top standards in four as well.

For the men, Hunt set the record in the long jump, Jakari Lomax set the record in the high jump while Hunter Christopher had a pair of records in the 3,000m and the 5,000m.

For the women, Nia Williams-Matthews set the record in the triple jump, Micah Carey set the mark in the long jump, Melana Schumaker set the record in the pole vault while Morgan Cole set a new standard in the mile.

Season Highlights

The men’s team etched four school records during the season:

  • In the season-opening YSU Icebreaker, Hunt crushed his previous school record of 7.74m with leap of 8.08m. That mark led the nation for more than a month and helped clinch his spot in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
  • In the triple jump, Lomax’s leap of 15.74m at the Tyson Invitational on Jan. 27 eclipsed his previous record of 12.40m.
  • For the second straight year, Christopher shattered the marks in the 3,000m and the 5,000m. He set records in both events last year before topping them this season. In the 3,000m he ran a time of 7:58.37 to lower his previous mark of 8:04.81 on Jan. 26 in Boston. In the 5,000m he clocked a time of 13:47.78 on Dec. 3 in Boston, topping his previous best time of 13:50.04.

Four school records were set by the women’s program during the season:

  • Williams-Matthews added to her school record in the triple jump at the HL Championships with a leap of 12.41m.
  • Carey broke the school mark in the long jump with a leap of 6.13m. She is the first athlete in YSU history to jump longer than six meters.
  • Schumaker cleared 4.13m in the pole vault on Feb. 16 at the Al Campbell Invitational in Akron. She broke the record of 4.11m which had stood since February 2022.
  • Cole set a new best time in the mile with a time of 4:51.75 on Jan. 13. The previous top time of 4:53.42 had stood since February 2014.

Season Notes

  • The Penguins nabbed 12 Horizon League Athlete of the Week selections during the campaign. Impressively, 11 different athletes earned Horizon League accolades. Tye Hunt was the only two-time recipient of the award. The men collected nine of the 12 accolades.Â
  • The men added 29 top-10 all-time YSU performances while the women produced 21 top-10 all-time marks.
  • At the events hosted by YSU in the WATTS (YSU Icebreaker, YSU Collegiate, YSU Mid-Major and Horizon League Championships), the Penguins won an impressive 52 events.
  • The Guins competed in meets in Ohio, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Massachusetts during the year.
  • Multiple event men’s winners: Dominic Perry won six shot put events…Luke Laubacher won the 60m hurdles on five occasions…Harry Barton won the 400m in three meets…Jakari Lomax won the triple jump in three meets…Dorian Chaigneau and Blake Sifferlin each won two pole vault titles…Ryan Henry claimed two wins in the shot put.
  • Multiple event women’s winners: Madison Murry won the 60m hurdles four times…Melana Schumaker won the pole vault at four meets…Nia Williams-Matthews won the triple jump on four occasions…Ainsley Hamsher took first in the pole vault at three meets.
