Truth about Olympic medal manufacturing standards #olympics
Truth about Olympic medal manufacturing standards #olympics In this video, there are some parameters which are kept in mind … source
I’d bring it down to 2:08–2:10. Especially with the reigning champion running 2:01. American needs the best to put someone on the podium! 2:18 say I have the prestige of saying a qualified, yet don’t stand a chance on the world stage! America has plenty of runners that can meet the 2:08–2:10 standard. We want our best athletes in the olympics. Not just someone who barely squeaked in!
I think the women are unique because unlike the men many weren't collegiate stars but found their stride later. The times will fall.
Select 2 slots at the trials, leave the 3rd slot as the best performer during the qualifying period
I know I'm commenting on a video that's a month old but I would be surprised if they did not look at the overall times for the women before deciding on that standard. They probably have an idea of what they roughly want the field size to be and set their standard based on those recent historical numbers. I just don't know what that magic number is for field size. 150? 250? They probably don't want to make it too small and make it seem unattainable for all but the super elite but having 500 runners was too much.
Hate to sound like a Debbie downer but shouldn’t the Trials qualifier time be minimum of IAAF Olympic qualifying standard of 2:15/2:30 (or faster) respectively?
If you make it to games but can’t even qualify for the Olympic Games …
What’s the point?!? Isn’t the whole point of the race is to attract people talented enough to make it to the Olympics?
With the new female standard CIM has 12 qualifiers. Down from 38 running sub 2:45
I'm glad to see that OTQ is being adjusted based upon actual race results as women have been narrowing the gap with men's performances for years. So when will major marathons follow suit as the gap between men's/women's BQ (for example) continues to be 30 minutes even though there is only 13 minutes separation between men's/women's world records?
Women's (Women only) Marathon world Record: 2:17:01.
Women's standard of 2:37 =1.146 X 2:17:01
Men's Marathon World Record: 2:01:39
Men's standard of 2:18 = 1.134 X 2:01:39
Technically, the men's standard is still closer to the world record than the women's, but the parity between the standards is much better than it used to be.
As a man I would prefer a smaller field even if it excludes my self as the potential for prestige is a potent motivator but I wonder if women are motivated in the same way, perhaps women are just naturally motivated by inclusivity whereas men are more attuned towards exclusivity.
It's definitely a steep drop but I've felt for a while that the women's qualifying time was too slow. Men's OTQ time is 114% of the world record. Women's old time is 123%. Even now it's only 117%, so from that perspective it's still "easier" for a woman to qualify than a man. Maybe that's not a good way to look at it, but just judging by how many more women typically qualify, it's obvious that the women's time was easier to hit.
Hi Sage! Thanks for the consistently great videos. Can you possibly do a video on what sets apart the elite elite runners from the rest of us? What makes them so good? Genetics, hard work, training techniques, stubbornness? Thanks in advance!
I'm nowhere near that standard of runner and I'm also in the UK, so I'm pretty detached from this whole thing, but I would argue that the standards should be higher. If only the top 3 are going to the Olympics, the field doesn't need to be that deep, especially if those top three also need to have met the Olympic standard too. Even with the qualification time, it feels like 90%+ of the field has no chance of ever making it.
I admire the idea of offering everyone from household names to unknown amateurs the chance to potentially represent their country at the Olympics though, it feels far more open and inclusive than the national governing body choosing the three to represent the country.
I like having the qualifying time. It is like a lot of the other majors. They are meant to be a race to showcase the greatest of us runners. If they want to have an extra race at the event for people who just missed out to allow them to say they have been to the event then that sounds fun.
The OTQ is to select the olympic team. The time standard should be set so that the people who qualify are the ones that have a realistic chance of qualifying. That probably means that the Mens and Women's field should be somewhere around the 50 runner mark each. I get the specialness of the qualifying. For us mere mortals, the BQ standard is the equivalent standard for us, so I get it. But if you're going for community then they should just make the Olympic Trials rotate between Boston, New York and Chicago, and then in theory anybody in the race has a chance to qualify and maybe you get the crazy story like in Boston when the nurse comes out of no where to win it and then goes to the olympics. I don't advocate for it, but if you're not going to severely limit it, then open it up to everyone that gets into the major marathon. Or take the top 25 men and women from the 3 US Majors and have them race against each other for the OTQ.
You need a carbon shoe, probably Nike.
When you give runners supershoes, you have to change qualifiying times
Awesome discussion, Sage.
I’m not really a fan of these super shoes because you’re gonna see everything drop. Heard Boston standards are about to lower. But I still wonder what Ryan Hall could run in the super shoes instead of just the flats he wore
2:18 is fine but I think I would have stayed at 2:19 for one more cycle and brought Women down to 2:40–2:42 range to get closer to equal numbers
Are you gonna attempt to qualify, Sage? I feel like 2:18 is still doable for you in a course like CIM.
I'm a 1:08 half marathoner dreaming about qualifying for the olympic trials. I got into marathons late (I'm 35 and have yet to make my marathon debut) so this olympic cycle will be my last good chance. I had been holding my breath because I figured the standards would be lowered with the super shoes. I think 2:18 is not asking too much. I do think that the women's standard was definitely softer than the men's, but now they seem about even. By the way, I am that full-time teacher/track and cross-country coach you mentioned 🙂 except I only run about 70 miles per week, but without doubles.
I like the new standards. Only the best should be competing for Olympic spots!
Instead of a time maybe just have the fastest times for 250 men and 250 woman that can race then top 3 get in… that way you never have to change the times just top 250 get to throw down to try to go to Olympics
A single qualifying event is silly for reasons you stated, injury/sick at time of time trial and you don't make it. Should be similar to first time runners of PPA/PPM and other races, where you need qualifying time in last year or whatever time frame. So it's not all about one race at one particular time.
whew, I couldn't do a half in 2:29
From someone who chased standard twice 2008 when it was 2:22, I ran a couple 2:24s and a 2:23, and then again in 2012 when it was 2:19, I ran 2:22:22, I think it made me faster. Never made it, but I liked a fast goal to shoot for.
Sweet video, I have always wondered how the standard has changed over the years. 50 seconds off qualifying dude? You still got this man. After what you've been through, seeing you still put out videos with this passion, I think you still got that qualifying time left in ya!!!! Thanks Sage hope all is well with you and Sandi
Glad they made the Women's QTQ tougher! I think it should be at least 2:30 or 2:35 honestly. Either way, the 2020 QT was definitely unbalanced.
