Northwest track and field prepares for MIAA Championships with first outdoor home meet | Sports

Northwest track and is three weeks away from the MIAA May 3-5 at Herschel Neil Track in Bearcat Stadium.

Over the next few weeks, the Bearcats will be preparing their bodies to compete at the highest level possible. Coach Brandon Masters said the indoor season gives the Bearcats an advantage over a lot of the MIAA, but once the outdoor schedule begins, the gap between all the teams becomes closer.

Due to Northwest not having a lot of athletes competing in throwing events, the Bearcats might lose out on some points at the conference meet. But, Masters said he still thinks the meet will be a great showing for Northwest.

“I still think that we’re a top-three team on both sides,” Masters said. “We need to do the job, and I think we can. We can finish that top three on both sides. You know, we have the people, and I think that’s kind of where we stand.”

Sophomore Lydia McGlocklin had a great weekend in the Bryan Clay Invitational April 11-13 in Azusa, California. She ran two personal-best times in the 1,500-meter run and in the -meter run. In the , she finished with a time of 4:42.32, which is now also eighth all-time in program history. The 800m time of 2:09.71 is good enough for fifth all time in program history.

While McGlocklin ran great times, she said the trip was great for more than just for track. The team bonding of getting to hangout, go to the beach and travel together was really uplifting.

“We got there Tuesday, and we kind of just went to the beach the first day, and we ran,” McGlocklin said. “And then we went to the actual track on Wednesday for like a mini workout. And then some people raced on Thursday. So we went to like a team dinner on Wednesday night.”

McGlocklin said the preparations for the next few weeks are going to get lighter in anticipation for the MIAA Outdoor . The team is hitting great marks, and she said she is excited to see how the team does.

“I think everyone’s at a really good pace to kind of pop at conference,” McGlocklin said. “Like, I feel like we have a lot of like times that still are coming, and with two more weeks of training, I feel like everyone’s just kind of hit when right when it matters. I’m just excited to see how everyone will do with two more weeks of training and then tapering and stuff like that.”

Northwest will have only the Bearcat Tuneup April 20, the Drake Relays April 25-27 and the Kip Janvrin Open April 25-26 before the conference meet. These last three meets will give the Bearcats more competitive training sessions in order to improve upon their times.

Masters said the six seniors who have just a few weeks left in a Bearcat uniform are a part of the culture change. For him, this recruiting class is an example of when recruiting the right person based on work ethic and leadership works out.

“This group of outgoing athletes were one of my first recruiting classes,” Masters said. “So I’ve got to see them through their entire career here at Northwest, and the culture and who we are as a team is certainly because of these individuals.”
