i’m from algeria and we have a dark history with the seine river. back in the day when algeria was a french colony they killed so many innocent algerian people in october 1961 and threw their bodies in that river where they held the parade. our athletes should’ve stayed in hotel and not participate in the ceremony.

I thought the show was great, original, beautiful and weird and I loved it.

One of the most boring opening ceremonies ever. Some people who were there left early because they couldn't see anything. If you're in a stadium the whole crowd gets to see the whole ceremony but on a river the crowd only gets to see what's taking place directly in front of them on any specific bit of river so they miss the rest. I wouldn't have paid those ridiculous prices to get a ticket for a show i couldn't see. I think the stadium ceremonies were much better. Beijing was the most impressive. Paris felt a big Eurovision party. Did the athletes even get to see anything or did they just get off the boats at the other end of the river and go home? And who thought of putting the flame in a big balloon? In the Louvre – not even in the stadium or a place where the athletes perform.

Well obviously, this was very French. Elegant weirdness a lot of singing and dark. I thought the Marie Antoinette piece with accompanying blood was dreadful. A most inappropriate performance for a sporting ceremony.

I actually thought the whole ceremony from the boats to the cauldron was spectacular. The rain was epic, the dancing was flamboyant, the river setting was brave and gave us something new. The teams in boats had charm. I know dragqueens etc wind people up- but they know how to put on a show. The whole thing could be used as a personality litmus test- do you actually watch things from other countries with any sense of wanting it to go well and with an open heart, or are you forever stuck in the mind of a miserable old sexless git
