Papa Leads Men’s Track & Field at George Mason; Takes Home Gold in Discus Throw


UMBC men’s and team ventured south on I-95, just outside the nation’s capital in Fairfax, VA, for a two-day at George University.

The first day of action at Dalton Ebanks Invitational saw only a few personal records on the men’s squad other than senior Jayo Adegboyo in the 200-meter event. Adegboyo ran his best time in the 200 dash since his last time at Mason with the Retrievers in ’23. His time of 22.27 was ninth overall and top twenty within the America East.

Day two festivities picked up drastically in both the & for the men’s squad as top finishes and personal records highlighted the afternoon into the evening. Starting with the men’s discus throw, second-year athletes Aiden Walker (51.25m) and Iosif Papa (58.88m) finished fifth and first overall. Walker improved his record by almost two meters, while Papa destroyed his previous personal record by nearly four meters. The discus throwers now find themselves in the top three placements in the America East, with Papa holding the top spot.

Continuing in the as the afternoon went on during day two, the men’s javelin throwers showed up after taking off a couple of weeks. First-year student Scott Gersten built on his previous best by over a meter (53.36m) to move up to ninth in the conference for the event. Sophomore Gabriel Koletsi came away second overall with a throw of 66.19 meters, maintaining his runner-up placement among competitors in the America East.

As the sprinters & field participants loaded up the bus, the men’s distance team arrived at Mason Stadium to finish the two-day event with the 1500-meter and 10,000-meter . Freshmen Sofiane Compaorg and Aidan Lundberg each had collegiate debuts in the almost-mile event, each coming in shortly after the four-minute mark. Sophomore Thomas Foulkes earned a new personal record in his only event of the day, coming in at the four-minute mark for 4:00.47 and 24th overall. Foulkes has slid himself in among the top twenty for the America East in a jam-packed event full of talent. Classmate Alex Xavier made his collegiate debut in the 10k to conclude another for the Retrievers as stadium lights turned on at Dalton Ebanks. He raced to tenth overall and put in a great starting time of 32:58.77 to continue building upon as the America East Outdoor Championships approach here on campus, May 4-5.     

Up Next: The Retrievers will travel back north for the Bison Classic at Bucknell University, which will be held Friday through Sunday, April 12-14.
