Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week Announced (4.2.24)


BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Army West Point earned four Patriot League Outdoor Weekly Awards when the honors were announced on Tuesday, while the Boston University Terriers took home two accolades.

Boston University’s Freddy Collins earned Patriot League Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honors after a time of 13:45.41 in the 5,000 meters. His time places him 19th in NCAA Division I and leads the Patriot League. Fellow Terrier Vera Sjöberg won Patriot League Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week with a 16:05.44 mark in the 5,000m. Her time is 40th in NCAA DI and leads the Patriot League.

Army West Point’s Joshua Gilliard earned Patriot League Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week honors following a 2.11-meter leap in the . His mark leads the Patriot League and ranks 29th nationally. Emily Fink received the Patriot League Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week honors after a Patriot League-leading toss of 63.11m (201′ 1″) in the hammer throw. The West Point junior is ranked 16th in NCAA DI.

Army West Point freshman Jaxon Hammond garnered Patriot League Men’s Outdoor Rookie of the Week honors after clocking a 10.68-second time in the 100m. The freshman is tied for third in the Patriot League. He also led off the Black Knights’ relay team that logged a season-best 40.90 second time in the 4x100m relay. Army West Point’s Mikayla Cheney earned Patriot League Women’s Outdoor Rookie of the Week honors after breaking the West Point Academy record in the 1,500m with a time of 4:22.80. The mark places her 76th in NCAA DI. The following day, Cheney logged an 800m time of 2:09.01. Both marks lead the Patriot League.

In a strong week for Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field, seven student-athletes earned honorable mention nods. Army West Point’s Michell Burr, Boston University’s Asia Hamilton, Lehigh’s Lindsay MacLellan, Loyola Maryland’s Lauryn Clarke, and Navy’s Joshua Boamah, Annie Lemelin, and Murphy Smith took home honors for their respective performances this past weekend.

  
Patriot League Men’s Track Athlete of the Week 
Freddy Collins, Boston University, So., Distance, Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional

*Collins earned a time of 13:45.41 in the 5,000m at the Raleigh Relays, finishing first in his heat and 10th overall.

*His time leads the Patriot League and ranks 19th in NCAA Division I. 
 
Patriot League Women’s Track Athlete of the Week 
Vera Sjöberg, Boston University, So., Distance, Stockholm, Sweden/Rudbeck

*Sjöberg ran 16:05.44 over 5,000m which leads the Patriot League by more than a minute.  

*Her mark ranks 40th overall in NCAA DI, and places her in position to qualify for NCAA East Regionals.  
 
Patriot League Men’s Field Athlete of the Week 
Joshua Gilliard, Army West Point, Sr., Jumps, Manassas, Va./Colgan

*Gilliard won the at the Florida Relays with a 2.11m leap.

*His mark leads the Patriot League and places him 29th nationally. 

Patriot League Women’s Field Athlete of the Week 
Emily Fink, Army West Point, Jr., Throws, Three Lakes, Wisc./Three Lakes

*Fink earned silver at the Florida Relays in the hammer throw with a 63.11m (207′ 1″) mark.

*She leads the Patriot League by nearly nine meters and ranks 16th in NCAA DI.

Patriot League Men’s Rookie of the Week 
Jaxon Hammond, Army West Point, Fr., Sprints, St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North

*Hammond logged a 10.68-second time in the 100m at the Florida Relays.

*His 100m mark is tied for third in the Patriot League.

*He also led off the Black Knights’ 4x100m relay team that logged a tenth-place finish with a season-best time of 40.90 seconds.  
 
Patriot League Women’s Rookie of the Week 
Mikayla Cheney, Army West Point, Fr., Distance, New Castle, Colo./Coal Ridge

*Cheney set an Army West Point record with a time of 4:22.80 in the 1,500m at the Florida Relays.

*She also ran the 800m the following day, earning a time of 2:09.01.

*Her 1,500m mark ranks 76th in NCAA DI, and both marks are tops in the Patriot League.

 
Honorable Mention 
Mitchell Burr, Army West Point, Sr., Distance, Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks

*Burr won the men’s open 1,500m with a time of 3:47.36. He also logged a 1:48.99 time in the 800m.

*It is the second-best 800m for Burr this season, who sits in 26th place nationally in the event. 

Asia Hamilton, Boston University, Jr., Jumps, Mississauga, Ontario/St. Edmund Campion

*Hamilton won the with a mark of 1.78m (5′ 10″) at the UConn Dog Fight.  

*She leads the Patriot League and ranks 20th in NCAA DI. 

Lindsay MacLellan, Lehigh, Sr., Distance, North Reading, Mass./North Reading

*MacLellan won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:36.99.

*She now sits third all-time at Lehigh and leads the Patriot League.

*Her time also places her 43rd in NCAA DI. 

Lauryn Clarke, Loyola Maryland, So., Sprints, Damascus, Md./Damascus

*Clarke won the 100m with a wind-legal time of 11.87 seconds in the 100m, setting a new Greyhound record and placing her second in the Patriot League.

*She also ran a leg of the 4×100-meter relay that logged a time of 47.88, second-fastest in school history. 

Annie Lemelin, Navy, Jr., Sprints/, North Wales, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy

*Lemelin won the 400-meter with a 1:00.71 time.

*The mark leads the Patriot League and ranks 83rd in the country.  

Joshua Boamah, Navy, Sr., Throws, San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch

*Boamah won the (17.23m / 56′ 6.5″), discus (51.62m / 169′ 4″), and hammer throw (61.94m / 203′ 2″) at the Navy Outdoor Invitational. 

Murphy Smith, Navy, Jr., Distance, Charlotte, N.C./Adrey Kell

*Smith set a Naval Academy record in the 10,000m with a time of 28:37.01 to best the previous record set in 1997.

*The mark leads the Patriot League and ranks 34th in the country.

PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS 
The Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at Bucknell University’s Christy Mathewson – Memorial Stadium beginning Friday, May 3 and concluding on Saturday, May 4. All nine men’s programs and each of the ten women’s programs will compete in the events as the Navy Midshipmen look to defend their men’s and women’s titles.
