Prep track and field: Zillman, Giberson lead the pack at Dubuque | Sports


DUBUQUE — For the second time this indoor season, Fairfield teammates Eli Zillman and Ryan Giberson pushed each other into contention for a boys’ high jump championship on Tuesday.

This time, however, Zillman and Giberson were the last two jumpers standing when the action was over at University of Dubuque High School Early Bird Meet. The Trojan teammates were the only two jumpers to clear the bar at six feet with both ultimately clearing 6-2.

Zillman, by virtue of having less misses during the , edged Giberson for the championship. The teammates combined to score 18 of Fairfield’s 28 points, leading the Trojans to a sixth-place finish in the meet.

For Giberson, the indoor season has produced a pair of silver medals for the Fairfield junior. Giberson finished second at the season-opening Iowa Indoor State Championships in Ames last week while Zillman finished fourth with both jumpers clearing 6-3.

Fairfield added seven more team points in three different relay races. The Trojans finished fifth in the 4×400 relay in 3:46.41, seventh in the 4×800 relay in 9:10.33 and eighth in the 4×200 relay in 1:41.91.

Dylan Adam secured a pair of eighth-place finishes for the Trojan boys, crossing the line in 6.97 seconds in the 55-meter dash after reaching 19 feet and 1.5 inches in the long jump. Gabe Tejada also finished eighth for Fairfield in the 1,600-meter , posting 4:55.49 in his first one-mile race of the season.

The Fairfield girls also returned to the on Tuesday in Dubuque, finishing 11th overall with 13 points. Lilly Bergren and Maya Lane each provided the Trojans with a pair of placewinning finishes in the 55-meter hurdles as Bergren finished fifth in 9.74 seconds while Lane finished eighth in 9.85.

Elyse Setterstrom finished sixth in Dubuque for the Fairfield girls in the shot put, reaching 32 feet and 5.5 inches. Carley Seeley, Malena Bloomquist, Caroline Van Pelt and Alyia Abbott produced the top relay time for the Trojan girls, finishing sixth in 4×800 finishing the two-mile race in 11:44.38.

The Fairfield girls finished eighth in two more relay races on Tuesday. Bergren, Lane, Samantha Lyons and Hailey Reinier produced a top-10 time of 1:56.92 in the 4×200 while Abbott, Madison Martin, Lauren Martin and Bella Buckley teamed up to finish the 4×400 in 4:49.22.

The Fairfield girls finished in a tie for 25th last week in the Class 3A portion of the Iowa State Indoor Championships. Lane, Bergren, Reinier and Lauren Martin produced the top finish for the Trojans, coming home in fourth place overall in the shuttle hurdle relay.
