The schedule was made to benefit Euro teams. Euro teams stick together against the world. Everybody knows it. They even go to Africa to get athletes to compete for them.
Small countries are probably better off with the mixed relays. Dominica Republic for instance, hence there gold medal in the event.
The reason might be for Femke Bol and McLaughlin to be able to run both the 400 flat AND the 400m Hurdles. The men have the 400m Final and the 400m H semis at the same day. So for the men this combination is probably not feasable. The womens schedule however allows this.
Very relevant analysis, thank you. You are right that small countries with obviously less atletes to change strategically, are somehow disadvantaged with this schedule. The Netherlands are comparable to just one average US state. But hey, that’s life. We can enjoy or medals the more. We multiply them with 52 in our heads. 😂
Name one event that women don't compete in. The parity issue is nonexistent.
Don't know if the schedule allows this, but even running in the early rounds qualifies the athlete for a medal, so if Hayes didn't want to run in the relay final, she could nonetheless have got her medal…. however, assuming most 400m runners will also want to run in the relay final seems obvious…the schedule probably favours the US as few other countries have 'spare runners' who can fill in for their stars without sacrificing a medal chance….NL without Bol or Kramer?
You run your best in the relays. Nuf said because you are running to win. Whoever the four best are, they run. You are trying to create controversy with your dialogue. Don't put shit in the game.
They wanted Felix to add another relay gold to her tally as she was on her way out ( funny she only has one individual Olympic gold medal), so Hayes became the sacrificial lamb
There will be no other relay that would replace the 4X400 at the end of the meet. It is when you put your best athletes out there. Doesn't matter what your specialized area is, you stick your best in the 4×400. That is what makes it a special event, especially on the HS and college level.
Your analysis is always spot on Brother!
Very enlightening, didn't know about this scheduling conflict from the last Olympics, but as you said, the USA has a lot of talent to pull from, someone always gets left out, it happens, but your right about one thing: They really should focus on using the 400m runners for the 400m Relays, it only makes sense.
I missed this video, but I went BERZERK when this went down! How can your national champion NOT be on the 4x400m relay?! I love Felix, but I personally felt that she was being afforded too many "privileges" regarding relay appointments. I understand her becoming the most decorated medalist in US history, but not at the expense of other athletes' opportunities. There should be a day between the 400m finals and the rounds of the 4×400. I do believe that in the relays your best teams should be out there, regardless of the individuals not running the open event (1991 World Championships with Antonio Pettigrew anchoring instead of MJ).
Very interesting video. You did a good job.
Let's not forget Sydney and Athing are considering running in the open 400. So this pretty much forces them to pick either the open 400 or the 4×4 relay. Maybe that's good for more athletes chances. I still really want to see what both of them can do in the open 400. Maybe they chose that over the 4×4 but thats almost giving up a sure medal for the unknown.
Loved the video until the mixed 4×4 part. Nothing wrong with it but what problem is it fixing since women have their own events. I love watching the men's and women's relay. The mixed relay is just an extra race, don't see how it replaces the originals
The mixed 4×4 is not that exciting.
The US women's team has a very unique problem that others countries would love to have. The author speaks as if these 400m specialist are the best 400m runners out there. Mu, Steiner, Muhammad, and Mclaughlin are extremely capable 400m runners who have posted world best times yet they concentrate on other events. Personally I'd love to see a schedule that encourages a double in the individual 400 and 400m hurdles.
I just think it’s weird that y’all are upset over Hayes not being on the mixed relay over the regular 4x400m. The mixed relay was entirely made up of people that DIDN’T or barely made the Olympic team. There was no favor for Allyson Felix. Hayes got removed from both 4x400m as well. Allyson got removed from the 4x400m the prior year to show favor for other athletes. It happens. Cry and move on! That’s what y’all told Felix. 🤷🏾♂️
Very good points you are making.
Mixed 4×4 needs more support, I feel like it's the perfect event to bring everything together.
Great analysis… i just discovered Your channel. Awesome content
when he smiled i attempted a field goal. i couldn't miss, even from 40 yards out.
ok dude. some of those women are not women
I wished the IOC would schedule the women's 400m, 400H and the 800m so that Sydney and Athing could double up in their respective events and the 400m.
I'm surprised they don't put the heats and semis of the 400m events closer for both men and women (morning on one day, afternoon of the next), then a day or two of rest before the finals. Also try to arrange it so runners can run the 200-400 or 400-800 double. Maybe they just need to extend the T& F competition over another day or two. Better than a mixed relay might be a distance medley relay, men's and women's events, to get away from the dominance of sprint relay events. No heats and finals, just heats with eight teams each heat , and the fastest overall wins the gold. That way each team has to run its best to get on the podium, no slow tactical races. Just an idea.
Can't stand the mixed relays
If Sydney decides to run the 400m flat and focus on the tainted WR of 47.60 held by Koch, she'll win the Gold, no questions asked.
I’m not a fan of the mixed relay as it’s obvious that countries like USA, Great Britain and Jamaica are scared to use their A-list runners for it as it occurs before individual events. So its obvious to tell who will be on the podium as Netherlands and the Dominican Republic are willing to take the risk since this event as an easy chance to grab a medal. As for USA in the women’s 4×4 I believe they will ALWAYS include at least one 400 meter specialist on the final squad no matter what.
