It seems there may be a clash of misunderstandings between African American culture vs African Americans who may not have been raised within mainstream black American culture. They can sometimes be labeled as whitewashed or a “Keren.” Gabby is a nice hardworking person who plays by the rules and is serious about competition. My husband is from Ghana and we have friends who are from Jamaica. They are very strict and serious about the way they do their things. If you don’t understand the culture you will think they are overbearing. Gabby expecting her teammates to show up on time for competition and being frustrated when they fail to do so does not make her a Keren. She wants to excel. There’s no shame in that.

We had relay issues with the Canadian team in the 1999 World Championships. Our 2 best runners were on bad terms. We had a baton mishap. It has to be a team, not just the fastest runners.
