USF Track and Field’s Men Set Two Program Records; Five Top-15 NCAA Marks

Tampa, Fla. April 6, 2024 – University of South and field continued their hot start to the outdoor season on Friday, setting two program records and winning eight events at the South Florida Invitational in Tampa.
 
Five different Bulls set new top-15 Division I marks on the afternoon.
 
Abdul Rasheed Saminu ran a program record and Division I -leading 9.95 time in the men’s 100m dash.
 
Just over 45 minutes later, Saminu lined up on the blocks for the men’s dash and set another program record to take first place. His time (20.34), is the fifth-fastest Division I time this season.
 
Also in the 200m dash, Shevioe Reid ran the 11th-best time in the NCAA this season (20.41). He finished second behind Saminu, with the second-best time in program history.
 
Markel Jones ran a 50.40 time in the 400m hurdles which ranks him seventh in the NCAA. The time ranks first among all freshmen and was the second-best in program history.
 
In the same 400m hurdles heat, Devontie Archer tied the 15th-best NCAA time (50.88) to finish second behind Jones.
 
In the 400m dash, Tre’Sean Bouie ran a time of 46.44 which would be the 30th best in the NCAA, if he did not already hold the 15th best time (46.07).
 
In the 4×100 relay, Zayquan Lincoln, Jaleel Croal, Shevioe Reid, and Nathan Metelus ran a 39.45 time, good for 18th in the NCAA. South Florida also holds the second-best time in the NCAA from Lincoln, Croal, Metelus, and Saminu (39.03), set last weekend at the Pepsi Florida Relays.
 
In the discus throw, Vincent Ugwoke had the 11th-best throw in the NCAA at 59.76m (196′-0″). The throw stands second-best in program history.
 
The pole vault saw Kobe Babin take first place with a 5.36m (17′-7.00″) clearance, which would have ranked him 14th in the NCAA, if he did not already hold the 10th best clearance (5.40m/ 17′-8.50″).
 
Goodness Iredia jumped 7.54m (24′-9.00″) in the long jump on his first attempt, which ranks him tied for 35th in the NCAA. The jump is Iredia pulled out due to injury after that jump.

The Bulls will head back up to Gainesville, Fla. for the Tom Jones Memorial Meet on April 12-13.

The USF men’s team won the 2024 Indoor AAC Championship. Romaine Beckford won the 2023 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the men’s high jump as a Bull. The team has earned 56 All-America selections and at least one All-American in 10 of the last 12 years, including a record eight athletes claiming 11 honors in 2021. Tampa native Shaniya Benjamin set a program record earning three All-American honors during the 2021 outdoor season, while triple jumper Matthew O’Neal, a 2016 graduate, became USF’s first six-time NCAA All-American. Bulls have posted two NCAA runner-up finishes since 2013 – O’Neal (triple jump, 2016) and Courtney Anderson (high jump, 2013). Head coach Erik Jenkins took over the program in 2020 and in the 2021 outdoor season the Bulls posted seven program records and 40 top 10 all-time program marks. USF hosted the 2018 and Field East Preliminary and the 2021 AAC Outdoor Championship at the USF Track and Field Stadium located on the east end of campus.
