Women’s Track and Field Finishes Second at SAC Championships


HICKORY, N.C. –The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Team brought home a second-place finish at the South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships on Thursday. This year’s event took place at the home venue of the Irwin Track at the Moretz Sports Athletic Campus.

On top of the second-place finish, LR brought home a handful of individual awards. Victoria Aransiola was the Women’s Indoor Freshman of the Year while Alexis Brown was named the Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet.

The Bears finished with 190.75 total points, trailing only Wingate who had 261.5. The Bears had a huge lead on the third-place finisher, Anderson, who had 75.75 points.

FAST FACTS FROM THE SAC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS:

  • LR had another great showing on the short-track as the Bears finished first and second in the 100-meter dash. Brown, who won the event, produced a time of 11.29, while Aransiola, who finished second in the , recorded a time of 11.57.
  • In the 200-meter dash, the flip-flopped positions on the leaderboard as Aransiola won the with her time of 22.87. Brown, who finished with a time of 23.26, took second place for the Bears.
  • Another event on the track that the Bears had a strong showing was in the 800-meter . Carolin Fuehren, who won the race, collected a time of 2:10.77, to generate 10 points for LR. Olivia Overholt, who finished fourth with a time of 2:15.48, gave the Bears five more points.
  • Getting another individual victory for the Bears was Holly Kone in the . The junior had a 12.63-meter leap to give LR an additional 10 points. In the same event, Sofia Ulanday finished fifth with her jump of 11.68 meters.
  • In the heptathlon, Miranda Marr had the best overall score for the Bears with a 4708 total. As Marr picked up a second-place finish for LR, Mathlide Etienne finished fifth in the event with 4209 points, while Patricija Nemanyte finished seventh with 3826.
  • Moving back to the track, Melody Jones finished first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.89. After the junior collected 10 points for the Bears, Sharonda Priester tallied three more with a sixth-place time of 14.73.
  • Speaking of Priester, the LR freshman secured a first-place time of 1:01.25 in the 400-meter hurdles. Etienne, who finished eighth with a performance of 1:08.44, tallied another point to the Bears’ score.
  • Another victory that the Bears notched on the track was in the 4×100-meter relay. The combined team of Jones, Aransiola, Kone, and Brown had a 10-point time of 44.77.
  • In the pole vault event, the Bears were well represented as Pearl Ballard finished second in the competition with a 3.48-meter clearance. Adair Dupree and Melena Howell, who finished sixth and seventh, respectively, had scores of 2.68 meters and 2.53 meters.
  • Getting another podium finish for the Bears was Fuehren, who finished second in the 1500-meter race with a time of 4:35.67. Sabrina Fleig, who finished eighth in the race, had a time of 4:43.70.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Team will now turn its attention to the final last chance meets of the outdoor season. The first last chance meet will be a -day event hosted by LR, which begins on Friday, May 10. The second last chance meet will be a one-day event hosted by Lee University on Saturday, May 11.
