One of the biggest track and field events in the country happens every May in Clovis – the California high school state championships.
Thousands of student-athletes want to qualify, but some have to leap over bigger hurdles than others.
The only thing athletes with disabilities want is the same opportunity as everyone else.
“I just want to feel regular,” said Alec Murrieta, a sophomore at Lemoore High School born with a heart condition.
“That requires a pacemaker,” Murrieta said. “That keeps my heartbeat at a steady pace, because when I was six weeks old, I needed open heart surgery.”
