Tokyo Olympics 2020 Day 1 News

Womenโ€™s 100m – Shelly Anne Fraser Pryce and Ellain Thompson impressed with 10.80 clockings. Ta Lou was fastest with a personal best of 10.78. Other podium challenges such as Dina Asher Smith and Del Ponte, all make it through to the next round.

Menโ€™s high jump – No real surprises all the favourites such as Barshim, Harrison and Starc go through on 2.28m

Menโ€™s steeplechase – No surprises with Girma winning in 8:09. The only USA athlete to go through was Keter who qualified as the last fastest loser.

Menโ€™s Discuss – Daniel Stahl the favourite qualifies on top with 66.12. Shock as Dacres fails to qualify

Womenโ€™s 800m – Goule, Reekie, Almanza and Wilson win their races, all favourites qualify including youngsters Athing Mu and Keely Hogkison.

Menโ€™s 400m Hurdles – No shocks as Samba, Dos Santos, Rai Benjamin and Karsten Warholm all qualify, no fast times with the fastest being Samba with 48.38.

Womenโ€™s 5000m – No real shocks other than Eilish McColgan getting clipped with 600m to go and not managing to qualify. Sifan Hassan wins her heat in the first race of many if she still tries to get for the 1500, 5000, 10000 triple.

Womenโ€™s Triple Jump – Straight forward for Yulimar Rojas qualifying as furthest in 14.77.

Shot put – Gong and Song qualify as top 2. But Raven Saunders of the USA looking the best and qualifying in 3rd.

400m Mixed relay – Biggest shock as medal favourites USA get DQโ€™d. Strange that Olympic athletes donโ€™t know which track markings to follow. Poland, Netherlands and Jamaica now look strongest for the medals.

Menโ€™s 10000m Olympic final – Predictable podium with Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo and Selemon Barega. (we predicted it would be those 3 athletes making the podium. But a somewhat surprising victory as Barega times his kick to perfection leaving the two Ugandans having to chase around other athletes to come away with 2nd and 3rd.) Amazing race by Bowerman track club athlete Grant Fisher for 5th!

Performance of the day goes to Grant Fisher and Ta Lou.

Biggest shock is USAโ€™s Disqualification in the 400m mixed relay and only one USA athlete progressing in the steeplechase.
